Isle of Wight Academy’s football team used a solid ground attack to rout VISAA Div. IV foe Broadwater Academy 42-14 on Friday night at Hooper Field.

The Chargers got 132 yards rushing from junior Alec Edwards, including three touchdowns. Backfield mate Carson Robertson, a senior, added 38 yards and a touchdown.

Isle of Wight came roaring back, though, scoring twice within 30 seconds in the second quarter. Edwards’ one-yard run capped an 11-play drive with 7:42 left in the half.

Broadwater went three-and-out on their next possession, then bobbled the punt snap, giving the Chargers the ball at the Vikings’ 25. Two plays later, Robertson plunged in from five yards. The extra point by senior Dylan Poe made it 14-7 with 7:14 remaining before halftime.

The Chargers’ third possession of the quarter ended in a similar fashion when Edwards scored again with 21 seconds left before the break.

Other offensive highlights for Isle of Wight included an 85-yard catch-and-run from junior quarterback Bryce Casey to senior Aaron Fronfelter, making it 34-14, and a two-yard run by sophomore Caleb Davis to cap off the Chargers’ scoring.

The Chargers were ranked third in last week’s Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division IV poll, one spot better than the week before when the Chargers lost to No. 1 Fuqua School. Broadwater (2-3) came into the contest ranked fifth in the division.

IWA (4-2) returns to action Friday, when they host North Cross School of Roanoke.
