The Daughters of the American Revolution Constantia chapter is sponsoring two essay contests.
The deadline for submitting essays is Dec. 1. All students in grades five through 12, including home-schooled students, are eligible.
Students in fifth through eighth grades are invited to participate in the “Celebrate America’s History” essay contest. The topic is “A Child’s Journey Through Ellis Island,” marking the year 2015 being the 125th anniversary of Ellis Island as an immigration station.
The length of the essay is between 300 and 1,000 words, depending on the child’s grade level.
Students in grades nine through 12 are encouraged to participate in the Christopher Columbus Essay Contest. The theme is “Joining Christopher Columbus on His Voyage to the New World.” Students are asked to imagine they have been chosen to join Columbus’ crew and describe their thoughts and feelings, skills that help in the journey and what they gain from the experience.
The essay should be between 800 and 1,200 words.
