Susie Clarine Briggs Walker

Ms. Susie Clarine Briggs Walker transitioned on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014, at the age of 108. She resided in Suffolk at the time of her death. She was born on June 15, 1906, in Wakefield to the late Joseph C. Briggs and Jamie Wilson Briggs. The family moved to Suffolk when she was young, and she lived there the rest of her life. She is survived by her brother, Joseph E. Briggs and his wife Gloria.

Susie’s early education began at the Jordan School of Suffolk, where she completed the third grade, and later in her adult years, she attended the Adult Basic Education Program at East Suffolk Elementary School in the late 1960s.

Susie was an entrepreneur. She and her mother ran a restaurant together located in an area called the “Front” in the Saratoga community. In addition, she also worked at the Butter Dish and was a domestic worker employed by the Leggett family in the city of Suffolk for many years.

Susie was a devoted member of Metropolitan Baptist Church.

Ms. Walker will be on view Monday, Oct. 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. A home going service will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at Metropolitan Baptist Church, and she will be laid to rest in the T.E. Cooke-Overton Garden of Carver Memorial Cemetery.
