On Oct. 28, 2014, the angel of the Lord carried home our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, Althenia Miller-Johnson, to eternal rest. She was born on July 29, 1925, in South Carolina to the late Irene Miller. She united in holy matrimony to the late Lester Johnson. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Rena Mae; one son, Larry Johnson; and grandson, Michael Johnson.

She was employed by Diner Room Restaurant and a caregiver at Nansemond Pointe Assisted Living. She had a heart and passion for caring for people.

Mother Althenia was a member of New Mount Joy under the leadership of Bishop William P. Wiggins Sr. and Elder Lula M. Wiggins, where she served in many capacities faithfully and diligently, for more than 30 years.

Althenia leaves to cherish her beautiful memory, four daughters, Noami Smith, Betty Bailey, Mary Tillery and Lillian Taylor; two sons, James Johnson and Earl Johnson; a special niece, Ruth Steverson; two sisters-in-law, Mary Stewart and Margaret Chavis; 20 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ms. Johnson’s visitation will take place from noon to 7 p.m., and the family will greet guests from 5 to 7 p.m., on Monday, Nov. 3 at the funeral home. The family will receive guests at 501 Oak St. at all other times. A home going service will take place 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at New Mount Joy Food for Living Ministries Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Viola H. Parker, and she will be laid to rest in the T.E. Cooke-Overton Garden of Carver Memorial Cemetery.
