Congressional elections, a full slate of local candidates and a state constitutional amendment are up for voters to decide today at the polls.

The polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Incumbent Sen. Mark R. Warner, a Democrat, is challenged by the Republican Party’s Ed W. Gillespie and the Libertarians’ Robert C. Sarvis.

Incumbent Congressman J. Randy Forbes, a Republican, is challenged by the Democrats’ Elliott G. Fausz and the Libertarian Party’s Bo C. Brown.

A total of 18 candidates are running for nine local seats on the City Council and School Board.

For City Council, incumbent Mike Duman runs unopposed in the Chuckatuck Borough; incumbent Charles Brown faces challenges from Leroy Bennett and Clinton Jenkins in the Cypress Borough; incumbent Jeffrey Gardy faces a challenge from Tim Johnson in the Holy Neck Borough; and incumbent Charles Parr is squaring off against challengers Don Goldberg and Kerry Holmes in the Suffolk Borough.

For School Board, incumbents Lorraine Skeeter in the Cypress Borough and Enoch Copeland in the Holy Neck Borough are running unopposed. In the Chuckatuck Borough, incumbent Linda Bouchard faces a challenge from Dorothy Bland Gamble. In the Suffolk Borough, incumbent Mike Debranski faces a challenge from Thelma Hinton. A special election to fill an unexpired term in the Sleepy Hole Borough finds Charles Leavell, David Mitnick and Jim Perkinson competing for the seat.

The election also features a proposed constitutional amendment on the ballot. The issue is whether or not a surviving spouse of any member of the armed forces, who was killed in action, can be exempt from taxation of real property, so as long as the spouse makes that home his or her principal place of residence and also has not remarried.

Voters in this election will also have to provide photo identification to cast their ballots.

Acceptable photo identifications include a valid Virginia driver’s license, a voter ID card issued by the State Board of Elections, DMV-issued voter ID card, U.S. passport, other government-issued photo ID, employee photo identification card, or a student photo ID from a Virginia college or university.

The document must be current or have expired within the last 12 months.

Voters without another photo ID can have one made for free at the registrar’s office, 440 Market St. A temporary one can be issued on Election Day, and a permanent one will be mailed to the voter.

Voters without a photo ID still will be allowed to vote a provisional ballot, but they must bring a valid photo ID to the registrar’s office by Friday in order for their ballot to count.
