Event offers parents tips

A free event this month aims to get parents more involved in their children’s education.

The fall session of Suffolk Parent University will be held at King’s Fork Middle School on Nov. 15, offering parents and caregivers advice on how to help their children succeed.

Sponsored by Suffolk Public Schools and Suffolk’s Early Childhood Development Commission, the free event will take place between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

At 8:45 a.m., the opening speaker, Dr. Adolph Brown III, will focus on “positive practical parenting,” according to a new release.

Brown overcame a childhood of extreme poverty, violence, welfare dependency and no father to be the first in his family to graduate from high school and college.

He has become a popular media personality, author, award-winning educator, trained anthropologist and psychologist, columnist, business consultant/coach, sought-after motivational speaker, husband and father of seven.

After growing up in Hampton Roads, Brown earned multiple degrees from the College of William and Mary. He’s currently on a writing sabbatical from Hampton University, where he’s a tenured professor, academic dean of the graduate college and chair of the psychology/education department.

Workshops will run from 9:30 a.m. till 12:30 p.m. Participants can select three sessions, whose topics include:

  • Teaching Your Kids to Save Money
  • Suffolk Library and Using Mobile Devices
  • Discovering At-Home Fun in Math & Science
  • Reading in the Kitchen: Recipes, Shopping & Cooking
  • Fantastic Family Fun with Read-Alouds
  • Engaging Kids in Reading Activities in Just 10 Minutes a Day
  • Reading Comprehension: The Key to Unlocking Understanding
  • Effective Reading Strategies for Early Readers
