Suffolk field hockey loads all-conference teams

Nansemond River High School’s field hockey squad led all teams in the Ironclad Conference with six first team all-conference selections and 13 player selections total, and the Lady Warriors’ Ali Mowry was named Coach of the Year.

Lakeland High School had four first team selections and nine total selections.

King’s Fork High School senior midfielder Rachel Gist was recognized as the Ironclad Conference field hockey Player of the Year, headlining her team’s four first team selections and eight total selections.

Of Gist, Lady Bulldogs coach Courtney Van der Linden said, “She was definitely a huge, huge part of our team, not just in terms of the game play but also in terms of the spirit of the team, and the direction of the team.”

Gist finished the season with a team-high 10 goals, and she tied for the team lead with seven assists.

“She definitely put in the hard work,” Van der Linden said. “She is in pursuit of figuring out where she’s going to college to play hockey.”

For the Lady Warriors, their first team honorees included senior forward Desiree Patterson, freshman forward Ashlyn Rogers, junior midfielders Claire Janek and Jaclyn Mounie and junior backs Ashley Hiltabrand and Cali Valdivieso.

“I think it’s a great thing that the girls were recognized in this conference,” Mowry said. “It’s nice that their hard work has paid off, and they’re able to be recognized by the other coaches, as well.”

Mowry’s guidance as coach helped her team achieve a 14-6 overall record this season, 7-0 against conference opponents.

Making the second team for Nansemond River was sophomore forward Ariana Samuel, senior forward Juliana Stewart, sophomore backs Victoria Czuprynski and Mackenzie Roach and junior goalie Alex Wilde.

Lady Warriors receiving honorable mention included senior Logan Crews and junior Avanna Williams.

For Lakeland, its first team honorees included junior forward Taylor Roten, sophomore midfielder Kendall Lewis, junior back Stasha Waterfield and senior goalie Erin Bradshaw.

Making the second team for the Lady Cavaliers was freshman midfielder Alex Kinsey and sophomore backs Kaylene Thomas and Haley Beale.

Lakeland players receiving honorable mention included juniors Shannon Leonard and Chaunsa Saunders.

In addition to Gist, King’s Fork’s first team honorees were sophomore forward Lauren Park, senior midfielder Randi Fiel and senior back Lexus Mills.

Making the second team for the Lady Bulldogs were senior forward Hannah Washburn and sophomore forward Nia Vargas.

King’s Fork players receiving honorable mention included junior Emma Marston and sophomore Skylar Wall.
