Junior Steven Effler received recognition for his performance with the Suffolk Christian Academy boys’ soccer team this season when all-conference honors were handed out for the Hampton Roads Athletic Conference.
The Knights saw their season end via a narrow loss in the first round of the conference tournament, finishing the season with a 4-9 overall record.
Despite SCA’s losing season, Effler made particularly strong contributions to positive things the Knights did this year and consequently earned a spot on the 11-man All-HRAC team.
“I was excited; I was proud of him,” Suffolk Christian coach Jeremy Effler, Steven Effler’s father, said. “He definitely was one of the top players out in the conference. The other coaches seemed to think so, too.”
Coach Effler said all the head coaches of conference teams got to vote on the selections.
Each nominated three players from their own team. Then, the coaches voted on which 11 from that larger group of nominees should be recognized with all-conference honors.
A possible factor in their decision on Steven Effler was the versatility he displayed this season.
“This year, he played all around,” said Coach Effler. “He didn’t just play as striker.”
Steven Effler made an impact on both ends of the field, saving goals as a fullback and scoring them as a striker. He scored 26 goals this season.
