Sylvia Brown Pond

Sylvia Brown Pond, 74, of Suffolk, passed away Nov. 25, 2014.

She was born in Danville and was the daughter of the late Edgar W. and Leora G. Brown.

Sylvia was a member of West End Baptist Church, where her hand touched many aspects, including being a Bible school teacher, Sunday School member, twice chairman of deacons, a member of the choir for many years, and chairman of church services.

She was very active in the Suffolk community, serving in the Riverview Garden Club, Magazine Club, Nansemond-Suffolk Historical Society, and the Suffolk Art League. Sylvia was also a past Board of Trustees Member for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, and a past chairman of the PTO.

Survivors include her husband, Richard “Dick” L. Pond Jr.; sons, Richard L. Pond III and wife, Jennifer, of Suffolk, and Douglas W. Pond and wife, Alison, of Wake Forest, N.C.; grandchildren Joelle Pond, Nicole Pond, Sierra Pond, Lexi Pond and Evan Pond; sister, Judy Smith and husband, Dr. Fred Smith, of Lynchburg; several nieces and nephews; and a cousin.

A funeral will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014, at 11am in West End Baptist Church, 105 St. James Ave., Suffolk, by the Rev. Dr. J. Robert Pipkin and the Rev. Dr. Chester Brown, with burial in Holly Lawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., on Friday, Nov. 28, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
