Tea, ‘Nutcracker’ this weekend

The Sugarplum Tea and “The Nutcracker Suite” are back this weekend at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts.
Saturday and Sunday, the magic of “The Nutcracker Suite” by Ballet Virginia will enchant at 3 p.m.
Prior to each performance, at 1:30 p.m., young ticketholders will be able to enter the magical land of sweets themselves at the Sugarplum Tea, where they can sample sweets, make a craft and meet princesses and the ballet dancers.
“It is a tradition at the center,” Executive Director Jackie Cherry said.
This year, an anonymous donor has provided funding for several pre-selected children to be able to attend.
“They realize how important the arts are to kids of a young age,” she said.
Cherry also thanked volunteers who help put on the event, including about a dozen young women who dress as princesses to meet the children.
“They look forward to them as much as they do the tea,” Cherry said of the princesses.
