The Nansemond River High School boys’ basketball team continued its winning ways by producing a 37-point home victory over Hickory High School on Thursday with a final score of 77-40.
Junior Josh Covington led the Warriors with a career-high 21 points to go with six assists and three steals. It was his third 20-point game this season off the bench. Senior Matt Allmond produced a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds, and he also had three blocked shots, despite sitting for most of the first quarter and all of the second quarter in foul trouble.
NR was sluggish in the first half, but really dominated in the second half, outscoring the Hawks 20-9 in the third quarter and 32-14 in the fourth. The Warriors went 15-for-20 from the field in the final period and forced 10 turnovers. The Hawks (0-4) committed 22 turnovers for the game.
Nansemond River only had nine players dressed due to injuries and sickness. All available players scored, and all played 10 or more minutes.
The Warriors (4-0) enter a tough stretch in their early season schedule as they visit Lakeland High School (2-2) on Friday, Oscar Smith High School on Tuesday, host King’s Fork High School (1-2) on Dec. 18 and visit Smithfield High School on Dec. 19.
