The two occupants of a home in the 300 block of Spruce Street have been displaced by a fire that caused extensive damage to the structure early Saturday morning.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 3 a.m. and arrived at 3:05 a.m. to find heavy fire on the exterior of the back side of the home, according to Suffolk spokesman Tim Kelley. The flames extended to the second floor.
Fire crews “performed an aggressive interior attack and were able to contain/control the fire in approximately 20 minutes,” Kelley stated in a press release.
Both of the occupants had escaped prior to the arrival of fire crews. No injuries were reported, either to occupants or to firefighters, according to Kelley.
The rear portion of the structure, both inside and outside, sustained major fire damage, and there was heavy smoke damage throughout the rest of the home, Kelley stated. A neighboring house also sustained fire damage to its exterior siding.
The occupants of the home were being assisted on Saturday by the American Red Cross.
Engines 1, 2 and 3, Ladder 3, Rescue 1, Battalion 1, Medic 1 and EMS 1 responded to the scene.
The fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire, Kelley stated.
