Heritage High School’s boys’ basketball team hit its free throws and downed visiting Nansemond River High School 73-66 on Friday evening.
Warriors senior Paul Hall hit two three-pointers to bring his team within two points of tying, as the score was 63-61 with 56 seconds to go in the game.
But the Hurricanes scored their final 10 points on free throws and made the game seem less close than it was.
Heritage senior Romello Anderson, last year’s Ironclad Conference Player of the Year, finished with 22 points, including going 12-of-15 from the foul line, and had 11 rebounds.
The Hurricanes out-rebounded the Warriors 47-30.
For Nansemond River, senior Matt Allmond resumed his strong offensive production, scoring 22 points, shooting 8-of-12 from the floor pulling in seven rebounds.
Junior Josh Covington, in a rare starting role, had 15 points but struggled from the field.
Hall came off the bench to score a career-high 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the three-point line.
With its win over the Warriors, Heritage improved to 7-7 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
Nansemond River (6-8, 0-4) visited Kempsville High School on Saturday evening. After a break for exams, the Warriors return to action on Friday, hosting Lakeland High School.
