Nansemond-Suffolk Academy freshman Tori Psimas practices on Thursday at YMCA Camp Arrowhead with the goal of dropping even more time in Saturday’s final regular season meet.

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’s girls’ and boys’ swimming squads showed they are headed in the right direction on Wednesday at the Brittingham-Midtown Aquatic Center in Newport News.

The teams produced 23 season-best times, while registering wins against Norfolk Collegiate School and losses against Hampton Roads Academy.

“They did very well,” NSA coach Karen Norman said of her swimmers. “HRA is probably one of the top teams in the state, public or private.”

She was particularly pleased with the number of season-best times.

“That’s great for a Wednesday night,” she said, later noting it is rough for swimmers to go to school all day, then swim in a meet at 7 p.m. “Saturday, you’re much fresher, so typically that’s when the kids swim their best, coming off a good night’s sleep.”

Nevertheless, Nansemond-Suffolk freshman Madi Wilson qualified for state competition in the girls’ 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:13.44, good for third place behind two HRA swimmers.

Wilson posted her best time of the season in the 100-yard freestyle (1:01.59), which gave her third place, and freshman Tori Psimas took fourth, also swimming a season-best time (1:02.09).

Freshman Anna Grace Towler contributed to the 23 improved times by finishing the 100-yard backstroke in one minute and 17.22 seconds.

Nansemond-Suffolk closes out its regular season schedule on Saturday morning when it visits Norfolk Academy.

From that meet, Norman said she wants to see “just faster times and more people qualifying for states.”
