Fall in love with local biz

You’ll fall in love this Valentine’s Day with all that local businesses in Suffolk have to offer. All you have to do is look around.

The Suffolk News-Herald and Suffolk Department of Economic Development are reprising a partnership that we successfully implemented on Small Business Saturday, two days after Thanksgiving.

Folks were asked to post photos on the News-Herald’s Facebook page from their favorite local businesses. We gathered up all of the names and all of the businesses — we counted one entry for each business visited by the same person, so people were able to enter from as many businesses as they visited — and drew four names from the dozens of entries.

Each winning entrant received a $250 gift certificate from the business from which their winning entry was submitted.

It was a great success, and from the looks of it, our participants had about as much fun shopping and taking pictures as we did handing out the money.

We’re doing something similar for Valentine’s Day.

You can visit any independently owned business in Suffolk between now and midnight on Valentine’s Day. Post a photo to the Suffolk News-Herald’s Facebook page, or tweet it, and make sure to include the hashtag #iheartSuffolkbiz and mention the business in your post.

Photos must be submitted on Valentine’s Day, and for every one that’s submitted, the submitter will get an entry into a drawing for one of five $100 gift certificates. Once again, you can visit as many businesses as you like and enter from each one.

We won’t do the drawing until Feb. 16, so you can’t count on the gift certificate to help you buy a loved one a gift. But you could enter while you’re shopping for your valentine, if you’re the last-minute type.

Regardless of what businesses you visit or what you buy while you’re there (no purchase required for entry, though!), let this contest spark your love for local businesses. You just might find a new favorite.
