Choose long-term benefits

To the editor:

The Suffolk Department of Economic Development has developed a proposal for use of the Obici site on North Main Street. This proposal is not in the best interests of current and future citizens of Suffolk, because it is a short-term solution to land use and lacks vision.

The site should be viewed as a green space to be preserved and developed as a park that would benefit the residents of Suffolk and guests to our city. Is such a plan challenging? Without a doubt! Is such a plan workable? Absolutely!

Good municipal leadership requires vision and a willingness to encourage cooperation among citizens to improve our city.

I urge the members of the Planning Commission and the members of the City Council to provide such leadership in this important decision and reject a plan that is a short-term solution with long-term negative consequences.
