Nansemond River High School senior Abigail Stopyra swims the freestyle during the Ironclad Conference championships this past week in Newport News. The Warriors and Lady Warriors were victorious for the second consecutive year.

Both the boys’ and girls’ swimming teams for Nansemond River High School repeated as Ironclad Conference champions on Friday, and they did so by wide margins.

The Warriors finished first in the conference with 482.50 points, and the Lady Warriors won with 514 points.

King’s Fork High School had a firm grasp on second, as its boys’ team claimed 237 points and its girls’ team had 288.

Lakeland High School’s girls took third with 132 points, and its boys took fourth with 111 points.

Nansemond River coach James “Shamus” Riley pointed to his team’s ground-breaking success last season in the new Group 4A classification as the spark for what has happened with his swimmers this season.

“The kids have learned that, ‘Hey, we can actually do this in the pool, we can win,’” he said, later adding that it is exciting to see how much they have improved from last year to this year.

Senior Cody Edwards finished the boys’ 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:54.82 to break the Nansemond River school record.

Also breaking NR records were the girls’ 400-yard freestyle relay team with a time of 4:21.92 and the boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay team with a 1:34.51 time.

The girls’ 400 free relay team included junior Kaitlyn Higgins, junior Lisa Terry, senior Madison Rivoir and junior Claire Janek. The boys’ 200 free relay team, which qualified for states, featured seniors Michael Betts, Josh Clark and Cody Edwards and junior Logan Eubanks.

Riley highlighted Eubanks and Betts. “They are two of the elite swimmers on our team,” he said, a point underscored by Betts’ qualifying for states in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.67 and Eubanks’ qualifying for states in the 200-yard individual medley with a 2:05.30 time.

The boys’ 400-yard freestyle relay team, consisting of Betts, Eubanks, Edwards and junior Daniel Kent, also qualified for states with a time of 3:29.87.

Riley said junior River Fiedler has shown notable improvement this year in the 100-yard breaststroke, which he finished with a time of 1:09.43 on Friday.

The coach also praised Higgins, who produced a new personal record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:04.38.

“It was actually pretty exciting to see her facial expression when the race was over,” he said.

Any swimmer who placed among the top 10 in an individual event and any relay team that placed among the top eight in a relay event automatically qualified for regionals.

All three Suffolk public schools will be represented at the regional championships, which are set to begin Monday morning at the Brittingham-Midtown Aquatic Center in Newport News.
