An assault charge against a Suffolk police officer was dismissed in Chesapeake District Court on Friday.

Tiffany Valentine was charged with assaulting the wife of Nicholas Thompson, another local officer with whom she was accused of having an affair. That accusation was made by Thompson’s wife.

Thompson’s wife had also accused him of brandishing a firearm and assault and battery, after she confronted him over the alleged affair. But those charges were later dropped at her request.

Valentine’s attorney, Randolph Raines, had said audio evidence would exonerate his client. Reached by phone Monday, he declined to say why the case was dismissed last week. “We have no comment on that,” Raines said.

Suffolk Police Department spokeswoman Diana Klink stated that internal investigations of Valentine and Thompson have both concluded. Klink declined to detail the results, though, citing city policy precluding discussion of personnel issues.

“Both officers are active employees,” Klink wrote in an email.
