Four charged in IW raid

Four people have been charged following a joint task force operation in Isle of Wight County on Thursday during which a dog allegedly attacked a state trooper and was shot and killed.

The raid, which took place about 6:15 a.m., also involved the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Department. It happened in the 8700 block of Smithfield Apartments Lane.

The search warrant was the culmination of an ongoing narcotics investigation by the Meherrin Drug Task Force, according to a press release from the Isle of Wight sheriff.

Three of the people charged have been arrested, according to the press release.

Direka S. Towns, 31, of the 8700 block of Smithfield Apartments Lane, is charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a Schedule I or II narcotic with intent to distribute, possession of a Schedule III narcotic, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Derrick L. Delk, 21, of the 5000 block of James Way, Smithfield, was charged with possession of a Schedule III narcotic and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

In the process of shooting the dog, the unidentified trooper shot a fellow trooper in the foot. The injured trooper was taken to the hospital, treated and released.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya of the Virginia State Police declined to say how many rounds were fired, citing an ongoing “administrative investigation.”
