Tidewater Motorcycles kicks off its annual Tuesday Chili Dog Social next week, benefiting a Virginia Beach retreat for special operations forces personnel.

Landing Zone Grace (LZ-Grace) Veterans Retreat was set up by Lynnette Bukowski, a widow whose husband was a Navy SEAL, as a place for transitioning personnel to “rest, renew and find individual focus for life after war,” according to the group’s website.

Pam and Brian Mathis are owners of the North Suffolk motorcycle shop. Pam Mathis said her husband heard about the good work of LZ-Grace, and “brought it to the attention of a couple of (motorcycle) groups.”

One particular group, the Ironclad Chapter of the Strength & Honor Motorcycle Club, decided to help by hosting the weekly Chili Dog Social the second Tuesday of every month.

“We have a couple of other people interested in hosting other Tuesdays,” Pam Mathis said, adding they’re seeking proposals from groups working to strengthen the community.

After the LZ-Grace event ushers in the 2015 season next week, the Tuesday social, from 5 to 7 p.m., will continue until daylight savings time ends.

The event held beneath a carport in front of the business at 4324 Godwin Blvd. “We’ve got tables out there,” Pam Mathis said.

Expecting a decent crowd for the LZ-Grace event, they’re planning to rig up a couple of tents, she said. “We have plenty of room inside if it’s raining.”

“We’ve been doing them for 11 years, and we haven’t run out of room yet,” Mathis said.

Strength & Honor started as a law enforcement motorcycle club but also takes in military service members and honorably discharged veterans, as well as “those who save lives and protect property, and all others who defend life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as embodied in the Constitution of the United States of America.”

While the Hampton Roads-based Ironclad Chapter will host the social night once a month, Tidewater Motorcycles will provide the chili dogs and other supplies, as well as the venue.

Nick Selby and Brandon Mathis — Pam and Brian’s son — will provide live acoustic music, and the motorcycle club will run a 50/50 raffle.

The food is free, but folks are encouraged to make a donation to help LZ-Grace.

“Our hope is that bringing in new groups to host the socials will provide more enthusiasm each Tuesday and bring new people together to support our community,” Pam Mathis said.

“We want to thank the Strength and Honor Motorcycle Club for not only hosting our first social for 2015, but committing to host the second Tuesday of every month this year.”
