The Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters has a little more money to help children and their families now, thanks to a Suffolk farmer.

William Hunter was selected as a winner in the America’s Farmers Grow Communities program, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund. One winner is selected in each of 1,324 eligible cities and counties in 40 states.

Each winner chooses a local nonprofit to receive the $2,500 donation. Hunter said he chose the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, because the hospital helped a family member.

“About a year ago, my niece had a little boy, and he was down at the CHKD,” Hunter said. “They did some excellent work on him, and he’s still doing well.”

Along with Monsanto representative Glenn Rountree, Hunter presented the donation to CHKD on Friday at the Suffolk Pediatrics office on Hillpoint Boulevard.

CHKD office supervisor Jeanie Ellis Pippin and practice manager Melissa Campbell accepted the donation on CHKD’s behalf.

Hunter, one of the few cattle farmers left in this part of the state, has about 300 head of cattle on his 600-acre farm, where he also grows corn, soybeans, peanuts, cotton and wheat.
