History front and center

History will blanket downtown Suffolk this weekend as the Civil War 150 HistoryMobile rolls into town.

The HistoryMobile exhibit, a 53-foot expandable tractor-trailer that is a project of the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission, has been traveling the state for the last several years and now is coming to Suffolk after the Division of Tourism applied for the visit.

Featuring interactive exhibits appealing to young and old, it will be the centerpiece of this weekend’s activities.

“It looks like it’s a lot of fun and educational at the same time, for all ages,” said Kevin Sary, visitor center supervisor.

About 200 children in fourth and fifth grades will tour the HistoryMobile on Friday, Sary said, although the general public also is welcome on Friday.

Split into four sections — Battlefront, Homefront, Journey to Freedom, and Loss-Gain-Legacy — the HistoryMobile covers the viewpoints of all who experienced the Civil War in Virginia — soldier and civilian, enslaved and free, young and old.

It immerses visitors in the sense of chaos experienced by soldiers, reveals the last letter written by a dying son to his father, and eavesdrops on a hushed conversation between a husband and wife considering the risks and rewards of fleeing to freedom.

The HistoryMobile will be parked near the rear of the Visitor Center parking lot, Sary said.

But because there are so many other historical sites nearby, the fun needn’t end when the HistoryMobile has been seen.

On both days, Riddick’s Folly House Museum — right next door to the Visitor Center — will offer tours, and period re-enactments on the grounds will take place on Saturday, weather permitting.

Also on both days, the Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum will be open for tours.

Both days also include guided tours regularly held by the Division of Tourism — a downtown Suffolk bus tour, a ghost walk and two differently themed tours to the Great Dismal Swamp.

One swamp tour will focus on its role in the Underground Railroad, and the other will explore the Washington Ditch area, Sary said.

On Saturday, the list of offerings expands. A genealogy workshop, presentation on the Battle of Suffolk by local historian Kermit Hobbs, and more are on tap for visitors.

“Come out and learn a little bit of history,” Sary said. “There’s enough to do that you can make a day out of it. Just have lunch at a restaurant downtown.”
