An auspicious season for the Nansemond River High School softball team got off to a victorious start with an 8-6 win over host Grassfield High School on Tuesday evening.

“It was a great team victory for the entire team,” Lady Warriors coach Gabe Rogers said. “Everybody did something positive for the team and for the win.”

This was nowhere more obvious than on offense for Nansemond River. Every player in the lineup got a hit.

Junior Jaclyn Mounie went 3-for-4 with a run batted in and two runs scored, junior Calah Savage went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, junior KateLynn Hodgkiss did a good job at the top of the lineup, going 2-for-4, and senior Morgan Lowers went 2-for-5, including hitting a triple.

Junior Maddie McGrath and sophomore Kelly Lafferty had two hits apiece, while senior Emily Carson and juniors Lauren Davis and Lauren Maddrey each had one hit.

Rogers was also pleased with the early pacing of his team’s scoring as the Lady Warriors were able to score at least one run in the first five innings.

The Lady Grizzlies were able to launch a comeback, but Rogers could not truly find fault with anything his defense did. He felt positively about how pitcher Lauren Maddrey was throwing the ball, trying to catch the edges of the strike zone.

“We just weren’t getting some of the calls that we would like to get, like most coaches would like to get,” he said.

Rogers complimented Carson and Mounie for their defensive performances on the right side.

Also, from centerfield, “Morgan threw a kid out at home, cut a run down at the plate,” Rogers said.

He said his team knew going in that Grassfield has some really good hitters, so when the home team made a comeback, the Lady Warriors had a simple task.

“We just wanted to make sure that we maintained our composure, finish the game strong,” he said.

Nansemond River (1-0, 0-0) is scheduled to host defending Group 5A state champion Great Bridge High School on Friday, weather permitting.
