Pie deadline extended

Oakland Christian United Church of Christ has extended the deadline to order Easter pies from the church.
Proceeds from the pies will benefit the Becky Godwin Scholarship Fund, which helps young people from the church who are attending college.
“Years ago, they did it to help the cancer society,” said Pam Saunders, who with her husband, Paul Saunders, is coordinating the pie efforts. “We have since kind of shifted.”
The church took about four years off from making pies but this year has resurrected the tradition.
All pies are homemade by members of the church and ready for pickup or delivery the Thursday and Friday before Easter, April 2-3.
Members of the church will work in shifts all day for several days starting next week to make enough pies to fulfill the orders.
“We’ll be up there cooking, making it happen,” Saunders said. “Our church is big on missions, and we consider this one of our local missions.”
Pies are $10 each, and available varieties are chocolate chess, lemon chess, coconut and pecan. Delivery is available for five or more pies at the same address.
The Becky Godwin Scholarship Fund is in honor of the daughter of former Gov. Mills Godwin Jr. and his wife, Katherine Godwin, who just died two weeks ago at the age of 98. It was started with contributions made to the church in memory of Becky Godwin, who died after being struck by lightning in 1968, during her father’s first term in office.
