Worried about asbestos on Obici site

To the editor:

There has been much debate about what Suffolk should do with the empty area where the old Obici hospital once stood. Despite innovative ideas for the land, the possible consequences have not been clearly evaluated.

There was a significant reason the old Obici hospital was relocated, and it was not solely for the purpose of more space.

It turns out that the old Obici hospital had asbestos after more than 50 years of service. This was shocking news to me. No one talks about this issue, but it certainly needs to be addressed.

This issue changes the way Suffolk should deal with the use of this land. Placing a residential or conventional building over this land could result in another asbestos scare and risk. Adding a park could expose children and adults, as well.

Suffolk should consider all sides of the story and consider all possibilities before initiating any building projects on this land.

If these issues are left unaddressed, it could have adverse effects on public health that no one will know about until it is too late.
