Thieves victimized more than a dozen people over the weekend by entering their vehicles and stealing items, including one couple’s wedding gifts.

The incidents happened during the late night hours Saturday or early morning hours Sunday, city spokeswoman Diana Klink said.

On River Point Drive, just off East Constance Road, the criminals entered and ransacked 10 vehicles. Two of the vehicles were missing items, including a cellphone charger, an iPad and a CD.

On Riverview Court, four unlocked vehicles were entered and ransacked, but nothing was taken.

On Sunday, police were called to the Hilton Garden Inn in the 100 block of East Constance Road. Bradrick and Krystal Fields said wedding gifts and other items had been stolen from the back seat of their locked vehicle sometime between midnight, when they checked into the hotel, and 9 a.m. Sunday.

A crime scene technician searched for evidence in the car, Klink said. There were no witnesses, and the incident remains under investigation.

Klink said it is unknown whether the theft at the hotel and the thefts in the neighborhood are related, but they are in close proximity.

“Safety is a shared responsibility,” Klink said, noting police urge citizens to lock their doors and not to leave valuables in plain sight.
