Nick Hamilton is bringing some refinements to Suffolk’s Ultimate Frisbee League this year, and he expects them to mean growth to the popular participatory sport.

Registration for the summer season of the Suffolk Ultimate League, hosted by Nansemond River Baptist Church, officially launched on Tuesday.

“We’re really hoping to see upwards of 70 (participants) this year,” said Hamilton, the league coordinator. “I think that’s a conservative goal.”

Last summer, the SUL featured 55 participants divided into four teams. Most of the people were from Suffolk or Chesapeake, but others came from Portsmouth, Norfolk, Carrollton, Newport News, Virginia Beach and Hampton.

Many were in their 20s, but there were also 18 teenagers and seven players in either their 40s or 50s. Most participants were male, but there were at least six women, as well.

Hamilton said he does not want to aim for something unrealistic in terms of increased participation, but if the league grows from 55 to 150, “I’ve got the structure set up to support that.”

There are a variety of reasons Hamilton expects the Suffolk Ultimate League to grow this year. Aside from the positive feedback he has received from last year, he also expects the 2015 USA Ultimate Beach National Championships to ramp up interest in the sport.

The inaugural event will be held in Virginia Beach on May 2 and 3 and will feature 56 teams and nearly 900 athletes across five divisions of competition.

“That’s really going to spark interest in Ultimate in the area,” Hamilton said.

He has spoken with a Virginia Beach Convention Center official about the Suffolk Ultimate League having a presence during the event to let people know about the summer season.

“He ultimately gave me a green light to set up a table,” Hamilton said.

For the 2015 summer season, Hamilton has lowered the minimum age requirement for participants from 16 to 15.

He also raised the hard time cap for games from 60 to 90 minutes.

“One of the biggest complaints that we got last year is that people wanted to play more,” Hamilton said.

The league will no longer allow team signups in the effort to make the teams more balanced. However, participants can agree on one partner who will be on the same team as them.

The registration fee is $25 and includes a disc and a performance jersey, the latter from SAVAGE, an Ultimate apparel company.

The president of SAVAGE is Todd Curran, a Suffolk native and 2002 Nansemond River High School graduate.

“He reached out last year after we got things kicked off,” Hamilton said.

Curran said he had told Hamilton, “We started an Ultimate company six years ago, and we’d love to partner with you.”

Since then, a partnership agreement has been signed, and the company will provide Ultimate apparel for the Suffolk league for the next two years, Hamilton said.

The summer season begins on June 6 and ends Aug. 8. All games will be played on Saturdays starting at 9:30 a.m.
