The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy girls’ soccer team finished the week triumphantly on Friday with a 1-0 victory over visiting Currituck County High School.

The win snapped a nine-game losing streak that included a 3-1 loss to visiting Norfolk Christian School on Thursday.

Scoring the winning goal for the Lady Saints on Friday was junior Katie King.

Junior goalkeeper Meagan Todd had 11 saves for NSA, including a stop on a penalty kick.

In Thursday’s loss to Norfolk Christian, it was senior Maya Venkataraman who put Nansemond-Suffolk on the scoreboard with a goal.

The goal ended a scoring drought for the Lady Saints that had lasted for eight games, contests played against challenging conference and non-conference opponents.

NSA coach J. Michael Dick indicated he was happy to get back on the board, but he was more pleased with something else.

“What I think felt better was it was a game for 70, 75 minutes,” he said, as the Lady Saints were in a position to win the game for most of regulation.

The Lady Ambassadors scored quickly, but Venkataraman’s goal made it 2-1 at halftime, and Norfolk Christian did not score again until late in the second half.

“It was a hard-fought match from start to finish,” Dick said.

The Lady Ambassadors benefited from the presence of junior Kayla Morrison, who is already expected to play college soccer for the University of Virginia, which is part of the elite Atlantic Coast Conference.

“We put our junior captain Drew Edwards on the Morrison girl in the second half, and she rendered her mostly ineffective,” Dick said.

He also praised the play of NSA sophomore center defender Kelly Hogan and Meagan Todd against Norfolk Christian.

“Both had very good games,” he said.
