Riders coast to the finish line of the 100-mile ride at King’s Fork High School during last year’s Tour de Cure, an American Diabetes Association fundraiser. This year’s installment is set for Saturday.

As the American Diabetes Associations’ Hampton Roads Tour de Cure fundraiser approaches, organizers are reminding riders and the general public to stay safe on the roads Saturday.

Riders should “have their helmet, their bike in working order, their fundraising minimum, and be ready to ride,” said Amie Holman, Tour coordinator.

Nearly 900 riders already are registered, and walk-up registrations are welcome as long as the $200 fundraising minimum is provided, Holman said.

There are four route choices, all beginning and ending at King’s Fork High School. The 100-mile route starts at 7 a.m., 65 miles starts at 9 a.m., 25 miles starts at 10:30 a.m., and 10 miles starts at noon. Check-in for each route begins one hour prior to the start time.

Riders should arrive in time to check in, turn in any additional donations, get breakfast, get their bike ready and head to the start line. Having the waiver form already completed (it can be downloaded from www.diabetes.org/hamptonroadsvatour) will speed up the check-in process.

Weather looks promising for the day, with rain scheduled to hold off until after 2 p.m., according to the National Weather Service, and a high of 59. It will be a cold start, but “they’ll definitely warm up putting in the miles,” Holman said.

There are eight rest stops located along the route. Each one will offer snacks, water, sports drinks and restroom facilities.

The course closes at 4:30 p.m., so riders should ensure they have trained sufficiently to meet the minimum time.

The finish line festivities will include a meal starting at noon, a post-ride massage, photo opportunities, live music, children’s activities, finisher’s medals and more. Breakfast is available before the ride as well, until 9 a.m.

Motorists on the road on Saturday are encouraged to keep an extra watch for cyclists.

“Be safe on the road and just know that they’re out there doing something for a good cause,” Holman said. “If you want to cheer them on and give them words of encouragement, that’s always nice.”

Holman said the city and Suffolk Public Schools “have been very kind and very welcoming for the event.”
