Alese Newman Hazelwood

SUFFOLK — Estelle Alese Newman Hazelwood, 95, died peacefully on April 27, 2015, in Suffolk. She was predeceased by her husband, Sidney Bertram Hazelwood Sr.; son, Sidney Bertram Hazelwood Jr.; daughter, Gloria Hazelwood Norris, her husband Edward Wood Norris Jr., and their two children, Edward Wood Norris III and Kendall Newman Norris.

She was born in Eclipse on Jan. 17, 1920, to Everett Hale Newman Sr. and Annie Mae Martin Newman. She attended the Crittenden School and then Chuckatuck High School. After graduation in 1936, she married Sidney Bertram Hazelwood Sr. and moved around the corner from her childhood home in Eclipse, Virginia.

In June of 1936, she and her husband began a life together that lasted for 47 years.  Her life was devoted to her family, church and community. She was a lifelong member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, where she was a substitute organist and pianist and former member and past president of the Methodist Women. She was a former member of the Junto Woman’s Club and former chairman of the Mount Zion Cemetery.

When her youngest child was in high school, she attended Obici School of Nursing and became a licensed practical nurse. She began her nursing career in Obici Hospital, was a private duty nurse for many patients, and ended her nursing career working in a doctor’s office. She also served two terms on the Virginia Board of Nursing.

Survivors include her son, Thomas Adams Hazelwood and wife, Karen Spady Hazelwood; daughter-in-law, Mary Ainslie Latimer and husband, Arthur Lee Latimer III; grandchildren, Elizabeth Hazelwood Jamerson, Jean Adams Hazelwood, Sidney Bertram Hazelwood II and wife Melissa Kristofak Hazelwood; great-grandchildren, Ainslie Hudson Jamerson, Sidney Bertram Hazelwood III and Molly Russell Hazelwood.

The family wishes to express its appreciation to all the employees at Lake Prince Woods and to the caregivers who all provided outstanding care throughout her time of need.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2015, at Mount Zion Cemetery by the Rev. Dustin Creech followed by a memorial service at Lake Prince Woods at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends in the Baker-Foster Funeral Home, 5685 Lee Farm Lane, on Thursday, April 30, 2015, from 6 to 8 p.m. Condolences may be registered at www.rwbakerfh.com.
