Bowman Reed Browne Jr., the son of Bowman and Jodi Browne, has become an Eagle Scout, the highest achievement in Boy Scouts of America. Reed received his medal at an Eagle Court of Honor on Feb. 22.

Reed is a member of Boy Scout Troop 1, chartered by Main Street United Methodist Church. Reed joined Cub Scout Pack 1, also sponsored by Main Street United Methodist Church, in September 2004 as a Tiger Cub. With his Dad as Den Leader, he progressed through the ranks of Tiger Cub, Bobcat, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos I and II. He received the Arrow of Light, Cub Scout’s highest award, in February 2009 and crossed over into Troop 1 the same month.

While in Troop 1, Reed had the distinction of serving as Senior Patrol Leader with two different Scoutmasters and had the privilege of going on “the trip of a lifetime” — a three-week cross-country adventure — in July 2011.  He also attended summer camps in Virginia and New York. Reed was elected by his fellow Scouts into the Wahunsenakah Lodge of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s National Honor Society, in May 2014. He earned the God and Family award as a Cub Scout and the God and Church award in October 2011 as a Boy Scout. To date, Reed has earned 33 merit badges.

For his Eagle Leadership Project, Reed created a workout program that utilizes the playground equipment in KidZone at the Lake Meade Park and built a message board to house instructions for the routine on-site. The workout, called FitZone at Lake Meade, contains both beginner and intermediate workouts and captures Reed’s passion for sports and physical fitness.

Reed spent more than 40 hours designing the program under the mentorship of Russell Edwards, athletic trainer at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, and he, several fellow Scouts, and adult leaders spent 99 hours building and installing the message board.

Reed is a junior at NSA. He is an honor student and has been selected for the past two years to serve as a Saints Ambassador, meeting prospective students and families and introducing them to the school. He has played football and lacrosse for NSA since sixth grade, earning several Coaches’ Awards for excellence and character.

Reed is an active member of Main Street United Methodist Church and has served as an acolyte and Vacation Bible School leader for several years. He also served his community last summer by volunteering at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in the physical therapy department.

Reed is a third generation Eagle Scout, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, father and uncle. Also following in those footsteps is Reed’s brother, Cole, who is a Life Scout on his way to earning his Eagle.
