The latest summer fashions will take center stage when The Carrollton Woman’s Club holds its 24th Annual Fashion Show this Saturday.

According to Sibyl Gillespie, the club’s second vice president and chair of fundraising, the atmosphere at the event is “relaxed and enjoyable.”

“It’s a fun afternoon,” Gillespie said. “The ladies enjoy talking, visiting and looking at the fashions.”

There is no narrator, she said, and the models walk in and around the tables so that “everybody gets a good look.”

At Benn’s United Methodist Church Family Life Center, 4571 Benn’s Church Blvd., the event begins with “marketplace shopping” between 10:45 and 11:45 a.m.

“We have vendors set up in the hall so the ladies can do a little bit of shopping,” Gillespie said.

Luncheon starts at noon, with prize drawings between models and a silent auction at the end of the show, Gillespie said. “We have men that serve as waiters for the ladies,” she added.

“We have a 50/50 giveaway, and a $100 gift certificate for Ann’s Dress Shoppe,” according to Gillespie, referring to the Waverly boutique that will be supplying the fashions.

Gillespie said the club’s membership has fluctuated in the years since it was founded in 1966, up as high as 47 and down to six. It currently has 11 members, she said, adding, “We are anxious for new members.”

Every year, the club gives away a $1,000 scholarship to a high school graduate in Isle of Wight County.

The club supports Carrollton Library, which it founded, as well as the Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department and Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, according to Gillespie.

It also supports the Isle of Wight Christian Outreach Program and the food bank in Carrollton, she added.

“In the past, we have given money for students to attend the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Program,” Gillespie said.

The Carrollton Woman’s Club meets 7 p.m. the third Tuesday of every month, September through May, at the Carrollton Ruritan Club, 14138 Norsworthy Drive, Carrollton, Gillespie said, unless otherwise announced.

“Generally we try to have a guest speaker that talks on one of the community service programs that we work with,” she said.

The fashion show is the club’s big annual fundraiser, Gillespie said, adding it also holds bake sales in coordination with Carrollton Ruritan Club fish fries, held the first weekend in November and May.

Tickets for the fashion show are selling for $20 through noon Friday. Call 846-3927 or 232-4678.
