Smucker’s Relay for Life golf tournament set

Cancer continues to affect many lives the world over, providing an apt reminder of the importance to help with the fight against it.

The J.M. Smucker Company is offering an opportunity to enter the fight this week via its fourth annual golf tournament, which raises money for American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life.

The tourney will take place on Friday at Nansemond River Golf Club, which is located on 1000 Hillpoint Blvd.

Shane Newberry, the operations manager for packaging at the J.M. Smucker Company’s local plant, is organizing the event. Speaking for himself and his fellow employees when it comes to cancer, he said, “There’s a personal connection for a lot of us,” later noting the plant has lost some employees to the disease.

All proceeds from Friday’s event will go to the American Cancer Society.

More than 50 people have signed up for the tourney, and registration is still open, with walk-ons welcomed on Friday. Newberry said the goal is get more than 100 people for the event, topping last year’s total, which he estimated to be in the 80s.

The entry fee for the Captain’s Choice-formatted tournament is $90 per golfer.

Registration/check-in on Friday will begin at 10:30 a.m., and the tourney will feature a noon shotgun start. Lunch and dinner will be provided.

Golfers will have a chance at winning $10,000 or a golf trip for two to Hawaii if they hit a hole-in-one.

There will be raffle prizes including a set of irons and gift cards. Each participant will receive a gift bag with an abundance of Smucker’s products.
