The aftermath of an earlier accident slowed traffic on Route 58 eastbound during this morning’s rush hour.

It followed a two vehicle accident that occurred earlier this morning on Portsmouth Boulevard/Route 58 Eastbound between Nansemond Parkway and the on-ramp from downtown.

The crash was reported at 4:29 a.m. The preliminary investigation found that a pick-up truck struck a tractor-trailer, causing a diesel fuel spill, according to a city press release. The vehicles came to rest on opposite sides of the roadway. One lane was briefly closed for the safety of emergency personnel earlier this morning. Both vehicles have since been towed from the scene.

The driver of the pick-up suffered injuries not considered to be life-threatening, according to the release.

A Hazmat crew and Public Works responded due to the fuel spill. Police remained on scene directing traffic, as the middle lane was blocked and traffic was being diverted onto the shoulder of the roadway allowing two lanes of travel.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
