A 65-year-old woman sustained a black eye and pepper spray was deployed during a fracas in the parking garage following the King’s Fork High School graduation ceremony at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk on Saturday, according to a spokesman for Old Dominion University.
ODU police responded to the scene after a report at about 1:47 p.m. that a verbal conflict in the parking garage had escalated into a physical confrontation, Jon Cawley said an email.
“The altercation involved at least three adult women from two families who attended a Suffolk high school graduation ceremony at the convocation center,” Cawley wrote.
“During the altercation, a 65-year-old woman suffered a black eye. Additionally, an ODU police officer was treated at the scene for eye irritation after a Norfolk Sheriff’s deputy used pepper spray to break up the altercation.”
No one was arrested at the scene, according to Cawley, but those involved were referred to the Norfolk magistrate for the filing of misdemeanor charges.
Two Norfolk officers also responded to the scene and assisted the university police after a 911 call reporting an “assault in progress,” said Officer Daniel Hudson, a spokesman for the city police department.
