A driver has been airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital this morning after a single-vehicle accident just before Portsmouth Boulevard on Route 58 westbound.
A preliminary investigation found his Hyundai Sonata ran off the road and into the woods, causing the male driver to be pinned, according to city of Suffolk spokeswoman Diana Klink.
Emergency dispatchers received the call at 6:16 a.m., Klink stated in a news release. Suffolk Fire and Rescue personnel extricated the driver and provided emergency medical assessment and treatment.
The man, whose injuries were described as life-threatening, was airlifted by Nightingale.
The on-ramp was closed for approximately 15 minutes as crews worked to extricate the driver, according to Klink.
The accident remains under investigation.
