SPS announces summer operations

Friday might have been the last day of regular classes for the year, but Suffolk Public Schools will still be keeping busy over the summer.

The revamped elementary summer school — LEAP (Learning and Enrichment Academic for Academic Progress) — will be held at Mack Benn Jr. Elementary School.

The district has partnered with the United Way of South Hampton Roads on the program, which expands the school day to six hours, incorporating classroom work in the morning and enrichment activities after lunch.

It will also run an extra two weeks, now going from June 22 to July 30.

Summer school for middle school students will run at King’s Fork Middle School between June 30 and July 28, Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Free for Suffolk Public Schools students in grades six through eight, classes offered are English, Algebra I, math, social studies and science.

For high school students, summer school will be held at Nansemond River High School from June 29 through July 29, Mondays through Thursdays. Tuition is charged for new and repeat courses, and breakfast is provided.

Online summer remediation will be mandatory for students who passed all their core subjects with a final average of 60 percent of higher, but who still need to master their local or state assessments in English or math.

Students can work anywhere with Internet connection — they can visit their school if they’re not connected at home — and a final written test is required. Transportation will not be provided, and students can contact their home school for more information.

Meanwhile, the district will once again participate in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program, which ensures low-income students are still provided meals when school’s out for the summer.
