Virgie Mae Barnes, 91, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, June 22, 2015.

She was born in Suffolk on Jan. 14, 1924, the daughter of the late Novela Brown. She was predeceased by her husband Ernest “Ben” Barnes and brother Jessie Brown.

She retired from Paterson Nutrition Project for the Elderly. She was an active member of Saint Luke Baptist Church in Paterson, N.J., before retiring and returning to Virginia.

She leaves to cherish her memories her daughter, Bettie Anderson, along with grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

A wake will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 28, at Crocker Funeral Home. A home-going service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 29 at Antioch United Church of Christ, 900 Hull Ave. She will be entombed at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Portsmouth.
