A Suffolk man is charged with assaulting a police officer after officers tried to arrest him on Wednesday.

Gerald Jerome Copeland Jr., 27, is also charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing justice, according to city spokeswoman Diana Klink.

Klink said officers went to a residence in the 1000 block of Davis Boulevard on Wednesday to serve warrants on Copeland.

“During the incident, the subject became verbally and physically combative with officers and also kicked a nearby ambulance,” Klink wrote in an email.

The warrants were in relation to a July 17 incident at the Happy Shopper in the 600 block of East Washington Street, Klink wrote. Officers were dispatched there about 12:45 p.m. in reference to a person with a gun.

The adult female victim told police the father of her child brandished a firearm at her during a verbal altercation, Klink wrote. The subject, allegedly Copeland, left the area on foot and was not located during a search of the area.

Warrants were secured at the magistrate’s office for brandishing a firearm and domestic assault and battery, Klink wrote. An emergency protective order was also secured, she said.
