Support the Clean Power Plan

To the editor:

As we head into August, Suffolk residents will experience an unpleasant summer pest: mosquitoes, which are the focus of the recent editorial “Take Simple Steps to Fight Mosquitoes.”

The unfortunate truth is that we’re seeing more and more mosquitoes as a result of increased summer temperatures, according to the NRDC. Climate change has contributed greatly to the spread of mosquitoes and the diseases they carry, because “as temperatures increase and rainfall patterns change — and summers become longer — these insects can remain active for longer seasons and in wider areas, greatly increasing the risk for people who live there.”

If we want to fight against mosquitoes, we must first fight climate change, and there’s no easier way than supporting EPA’s Clean Power Plan.

The Clean Power Plan, which uses state-created plans to reduce carbon emissions, ensures that the US will reduce carbon pollution by 30 percent by the year 2030. Reducing carbon emissions can reduce pollution and slow global warming.

Unfortunately, the plan is being attacked in Congress by those who wish to dismantle environmental legislation. Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell has already assembled a coalition against the bill, and Virginia needs your help to make sure it passes.

Taking action is essential, and if you worry about the spread of diseases from mosquitoes, you’ll reach out to Senator Mark Warner. His Washington, D.C., office can be reached at (202)224-2023.

Make sure to tell him that you’re a constituent and that you’d like him to support the Clean Power Plan.
