A fun run set for this Thursday will help support Suffolk’s youth programs, while helping provide class credit for a trio of high-schoolers.

Arielle Reyes, Kiana Kemp and Kenny Nguyen are planning the event to fulfill part of the requirements for the International Baccalaureate program at King’s Fork High School.

“I’ve loved collaborating with my friends,” Reyes said. “It’s a very lengthy process, but it’s worth it, because I met a lot of people.”

Reyes said she has been to other fun runs and “wanted to kind of create my own.” She also wanted to support Suffolk Parks and Recreation’s youth programs.

“It’s meant to benefit the Suffolk Youth Achievement Awards,” she said.

The fun run is set for 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Lake Meade Park, 201 Holly Lawn Parkway, behind Farm Fresh on North Main Street.

Reyes said the event will kick off with introductions and a warm-up led by a Zumba instructor, followed by the fun run itself, raffles and closing remarks.

Participants do not need to pre-register but should bring the $5 fee with them. Children 12 and under are free.

“It’s all for the benefit of Suffolk youth,” Reyes said. “We want to get more awareness towards the youth achievement awards. My teammates and I are all from the city of Suffolk, and we want to give back to the community we call our home.”

The project is fulfilling the Creativity, Action and Service portion of the International Baccalaureate program for the three organizers, who are all seniors in the program. Participation in various activities as well as completing their own project are requirements of the college preparatory program.
