Saints start out 1-1 in soccer

The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy boys’ soccer team rebounded from a season-opening loss on Tuesday to defeat host Ridgecroft School 9-0 on Thursday.

The Saints had four players finish with two goals against the Rams, and three players had two assists apiece.

Sophomore Chris Morgan had two goals and two assists, junior Gustav Berner scored two goals, senior Louie Joseph had two goals and an assist, junior Garrett Leicester scored twice and junior Dallin Vetter had a goal and an assist.

Junior Tanner Jackson recorded two assists, sophomore Owen Firnstahl had two and senior Michael Luzzatto had one.

Junior Ryan Griffin and Luzzatto helped account for the shutout in goal.

On Tuesday, visiting Hampton Roads Academy pulled ahead in the last five minutes of regulation to defeat NSA 2-1.

“Hard-fought contest,” Saints coach Patrick Whelan stated in an email.

The Navigators took a 1-0 lead, and the Saints tied things up in the second half on a goal by Tanner Jackson, with sophomore Arik Behrendt providing the assist.

HRA had a golden opportunity to take a 2-1 lead earlier in the game when it was awarded a penalty kick, but Ryan Griffin made an outstanding PK save to preserve the tie.

Nansemond-Suffolk (1-1) hosts Portsmouth Christian School on Thursday.
