Seven displaced in fire

A family of seven has been displaced after a fire in the 1600 block of East Washington Street early Tuesday.
The fire was reported at 1:44 a.m., and the first units arrived on scene at 1:47 a.m., according to a city press release. Firefighters found smoke showing from the exterior of the single-story residence.
The occupants had evacuated prior to firefighters’ arrival, but an adult male was transported to Sentara Obici Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, according to the release. No firefighters were injured.
The blaze was confined to the kitchen and called under control at 2:45 a.m.
The family is being assisted by the American Red Cross, according to the press release.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
