A Suffolk man died Monday after being pulled from the water in Corolla, N.C.

Sheriff Susan Johnson said the incident was reported about 2:30 p.m. near milepost 5 on the south beach in Corolla. The caller said witnesses pulled a man from the water after seeing him go under. He was unconscious and bystanders were performing CPR.

Emergency medical services arrived and pronounced Mark Simmons, 56, dead, Johnson said.
