September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the Suffolk Public Library joins the American Library Association and libraries across the country to promote the value of a library card and library services.

Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school. The Suffolk Public Library wants to make sure that every student has the most import school supply of all — a free library card.

Resources at the Suffolk Public Library are available to anyone who has a library card. Students can turn to the library for materials, programs and knowledgeable library staff that support academic achievement. All Suffolk Library locations feature Creation Exploration classes, which build skills in science, technology, engineering, the arts and math in fun ways. Check out the calendar of events for other fun learning opportunities including Goosebumps Grossology programs, Preschool Discovery Hour, LEGO Clubs, and much more.

Today’s libraries aren’t only a place of quiet study, but also creative and engaging community centers where students can collaborate using new technologies, develop new skills or just relax with peers. Our library offers access to a variety of print and digital resources, including digital books, audiobooks and magazines, streaming movies and music, online courses through Universal Class, online homework help and much more. It all can be accessed in person or online for free with a library card.

“A library card is one of the most powerful back to school supplies available to students,” says Allyson Renell, youth and family services manager for the library. “Not only will the card help support academic success by giving children access to materials and databases to help them complete their school assignments, it gives them a window to explore personal interests and builds excitement about learning. And it’s all free with a library card.”

Throughout the course of the month, the library will be celebrating the “smartest card in your wallet” by hosting a number of activities and offering perks to library card holders.
