Lewis R. Melton

Lewis R. Melton passed away on Sept. 25, 2015. A native of Tarboro, N.C., he was the son of the late Luther Melton Sr. and Carrie Collins Melton. He is predeceased by a sister, Christine Melton Hitt; brothers, Mahlon Melton, Ray Melton, Victor Melton and Luther Melton Jr.; and a brother-in-law, Joe Renfroe. Lewis was a veteran of World War II and a retiree of Suffolk Public Schools. He was a member of Oakland United Christian Church.

He is survived by a daughter, Ginny Lee Melton, the love of his life; two grandchildren, Kaitlin Collins Gudger and Cody Whitson Gudger, whom he greatly adored; two sisters, Peggy Renfroe and Edith Bradley (Bennie); and nieces and nephews whom he loved.

A funeral will be held Monday, Sept. 28, 2015, at 11 a.m. at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., Suffolk, with the Rev. James W. Browder III officiating. Burial will be at Newman Memorial Cemetery. A visitation will be held Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015, at the funeral home from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Sherry Ashburn and Shirley Boone.
