Martha Alice Pope Jones, 67, passed away in Rocky Mount, N.C., on Oct. 4, 2015.

A native of Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late Samuel J. and Norma A. Pope Jr. and was also predeceased by her brother, Samuel James Pope III.

Martha was a member of The Alliance Church in Portsmouth, where she served on the governing board, deaconess and Awana teacher. She was active in the Tidewater Community College theater program. She received her Bachelor of Elementary Education from Elon College and her Master of Education from Old Dominion University. She was a teacher for Suffolk Public Schools, retiring after 37 years.

Martha had a great love of children, loved singing karaoke, laughing, spending time at the beach eating coconut shrimp and pizza.

She was beloved by many family members and good friends and leaves behind her adorable, lovable cats, Sox and Lucky.

A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015, at 2 p.m. at The Alliance Church, 5809 Portsmouth Blvd., Portsmouth, VA 23701 by Pastor Doug Ellenberger with burial following at Oak Grove Cemetery.
