Fun Fly kicks off the season

Let’s face it: The kids are still riding the wave of a sugar rush from their haul on Halloween, even though you’ve already raided their buckets and bags for your favorite treats. But there’s no denying that Christmas is around the corner, especially if you’ve been in one of the area’s fine retail outlets.

Setting aside the fact that there’s still another important holiday between now and Dec. 25, it’s time to recognize that you’re already behind schedule on your Christmas shopping. Somebody on your Christmas list is guaranteed to have nearly completed his or her own list, and it’s a safe bet that someone else you know and love has already started hauling boxes of decorations out of the attic, assuming they didn’t just go ahead and take advantage of the weekend to string the lights and erect the tree in a flurry of premature ornamentation.

We’re going to go out on a limb and assume that we’re not the first to wish you Happy Holidays, and we’ll embrace the sentiment right through Thanksgiving, after which we’ll wait a respectable week or so to change to the politically incorrect Merry Christmas.

However you choose to express the thought, the days between now and Christmas grow shorter and fewer.

One of our favorite holiday celebrations takes place this weekend at the Hampton Roads Radio Control Club airfield off Pembroke Lane in Lone Star Lakes Park. As a fundraiser and toy-collection kickoff for Suffolk’s Toys for Tots program, the Fun Fly has all the hallmarks of Christmas, even though the holiday is still more than a month away.

Day and night sessions will be held. The day session lasts from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a pilots’ meeting at 9. Awards and prizes will be given at 3. The night session begins with a pilots’ meeting at 3 p.m. and lasts until 8 p.m.

The landing fee for pilots is $10 or a toy for Toys for Tots. All radio-controlled aircraft, big or small, are welcome. Spectators are also encouraged to bring toys or cash donations for the effort. Refreshments will be available.
