The Nansemond River High School boys’ volleyball team’s 2015 season came to an end on Wednesday against No. 1-seeded Menchville High School in the Conference 10 tournament semifinals at Warwick High School.
The No. 5 Warriors fell to the Monarchs 17-25, 19-25, 23-25.
“I wish we could have won the third set because I felt like we were gaining momentum,” Nansemond River coach James Vann said. “We were still scrappy like always,” but limiting the Warriors is a lack of players for whom volleyball is their primary sport.
Despite the loss, Vann was especially pleased with the play of sophomore Max Widegreen, senior Davontrez Wallace and senior Keoni Broad.
Menchville went on to win the conference tournament championship 3-1 on Thursday against Gloucester High School.
Nansemond River finished the season with a 4-12 overall record and went 1-4 in Conference 10 during the regular season.
Vann acknowledged specifically the overall record as not being great, but he said he was pleased with how competitive his team was, often keeping games close.
“Even some of the (matches) we lost in three, we were right there, still with them,” he said. “For having the inexperience that we had, I thought we did really well.”
The only players returning this year were Wallace and Broad, Vann said, but he is optimistic about having a solid group of returning players to build around next year.
“We should have five coming back,” he said, referring to three juniors, one sophomore and one freshman from this year’s squad.
