A bunch of squares drawn on the back of a checkbook has morphed into Slideby, a board game invented by retired Suffolk firefighter Arthur Barrett.

Barrett will unveil Slideby — a game in which players strategically move their pawns to the opposite side of the board — today during (Re)Stored, a downtown “pop-up shop” event. As part of the festivities, Oasis Café Lounge, 137 W. Washington St., will host a Slideby Game Day from 2 to 6 p.m.  Saturday.

“Winning depends on the luck of the dice,” said Barrett, who designed and sketched the game several years ago while riding with friends to Atlantic City, N.J.

“I ended up spending the whole weekend working on the plan. Then, I came home and cut the first board out on plywood.”

It took 12 practice boards — each one with modest changes and improvements — and 18 months of legal hoops to get a trademark registered and patent approved for the game, Barrett said.

He has 1,000 copies of the game to sell for $26.48, including tax. For now, it is available through Barrett or on his website, slidebygame.com. While Barrett is the game designer, his wife, Valerie Barrett, is president of their company, GameChanger LLC.

While adults and children can play Slideby, Barrett says he is most promoting it to senior citizens. He has visited several nursing homes to share it with residents in recent weeks.

The game is designed to challenge the mind and is particularly effective for helping keep the elderly’s cognitive skills sharp, Barrett said.

He is also targeting families, with hopes that parents and grandparents will use the game to spur conversations with youngsters.

“I can’t compete with electronic devices with the younger generation,” Barrett said. “But I’m hoping this game will bring people back to the kitchen table, to have conversations and interact with one another.”
